Battling Fall Armyworm Infestations

Fall armyworms are caterpillars that can make an appearance in Virginia lawns. These pests are not typically encountered in Central Virginia, but the influx of adult moths from the south, brought about by offshore winds, can lead to their presence. These caterpillars measure approximately 1-1½ inches in length, displaying colors ranging from green to mottled brown, and even almost black. They are characterized by a distinct black stripe running along each side of their body. Fall armyworms derive their name from their marching behavior, which involves feeding in groups and leaving a path of brown turf in their wake.

The sudden appearance of fall armyworms in your lawn can be attributed to the influx of adult moths and subsequent egg-laying. Once hatched, the caterpillars start feeding on the grass blades, leading to rapid and extensive damage. The damage becomes noticeable as a pronounced line between affected and unaffected areas. Unfortunately, by the time you observe the damage, the infestation is already underway.
